Most kitchens have one oven and most meals want more than one thing in it. Recipes are written as if each dish has the oven to itself, so the moment you cook a real meal you're solving a problem nobody wrote instructions for.
It breaks into four decisions, and they have to be made in this order.
The Four Decisions, in Order

People generally jump to decision 2 and skip 1 entirely, which is how puff pastry ends up baking at 350°F alongside a casserole and comes out greasy instead of layered.
Decision 1: Can They Share?
Two things disqualify a dish. The first is a temperature gap wider than about 75°F from everything else — at that point the compromise is worse for both dishes than sequencing would be.
The second is subtler and matters more: some dishes treat temperature as a structural instruction rather than a speed setting. Puff pastry needs heat high enough to flash the water in its butter into steam and force the layers apart; cooler doesn't mean slower, it means greasy. Choux has to set before it collapses. Soufflés and bread depend on a specific initial rise. Custards and cheesecake fail in the opposite direction — too hot and they curdle or crack, and no time adjustment repairs it.
For everything else — roasts, casseroles, vegetables, potatoes, most cookies and cakes — temperature really is just a speed setting, and the arithmetic below works.
Decision 2 and 3: Temperature and Time

Once the oven is at a temperature neither dish asked for, both times move — in opposite directions. The estimate in common use is new time = original time × (original temp ÷ new temp), then add roughly 10% for two dishes or 15% for three, because a fuller oven cooks more slowly. The lower temperature wins whenever the gap is wide, for a reason worth internalising: failure is asymmetric. Underdone is recoverable by leaving something in longer. Burnt is not recoverable at all.
Decision 4: Racks and Timing
An oven gives two kinds of heat, which is why advice on which rack is hottest contradicts itself. The element at the bottom throws radiant heat that hits the base of a pan hardest; the air it heats rises, making the top of the cavity warmer and putting the top rack nearest the broiler. For timing, work backwards from the longest dish. Each other dish goes in when the time remaining equals its own adjusted time — the same subtraction used for staggering vegetables on one sheet pan. Offset the pans left and right rather than stacking them, and swap rack positions at the halfway mark.
Building a Whole-Meal Schedule
For a full meal, sequence by what tolerates waiting rather than by what's most important. Some dishes hold well for half an hour; others are ruined in five minutes.

The large roast resting is the key to the whole thing. A roast that needs 30 minutes out of the oven before carving hands you a 30-minute window at exactly the moment everything else needs heat, and at whatever temperature you like. Most meal-timing problems dissolve once you plan around that window rather than fighting it.
When It Still Goes Wrong
