One oven, two recipes, two different temperatures. Every guide gives the same first half of the answer — split the difference — and then stops, which leaves you with the harder question: if the oven is now at the wrong temperature for both dishes, how long does each one need?
That part has an answer too.
Step 1: The Compromise Temperature
For dishes within about 50°F of each other, set the oven to the midpoint. A dish wanting 400°F and one wanting 450°F share happily at 425°F. Round to the nearest 25°F since that's how oven dials are marked and how most recipes are written.
The reason this works at all is that home ovens are far less precise than recipes imply. A typical oven drifts 15-25°F from its set point and varies by a similar margin between the top and bottom of the cavity — so a 25°F compromise is inside the noise your oven was already producing. Step 2: Adjust Each Time
Both dishes are now cooking at a temperature they didn't ask for, so both times move.
New time = original time × (original temp ÷ new temp)

Notice the two move in opposite directions, which is the part that catches people out. Setting one compromise temperature and then using both original times leaves one dish underdone and the other overdone.
Step 3: Stagger the Start
Once you have both adjusted times, work backwards from the longer one. The dish needing 32 minutes goes in first; the 38-minute dish… actually goes in first, since it's longer. The shorter dish joins it when the time remaining matches its own time.

Step 4: Add for a Fuller Oven
A loaded oven cooks more slowly than an empty one, and this is the adjustment almost nobody mentions. More food absorbs more heat, dishes block airflow around one another, and the door is open longer while you load and check. Allow roughly 10% extra for two dishes and 15% for three before you start suspecting the recipe was wrong.
When the Gap Is Too Wide

The reason to favour the lower temperature once the gap widens is asymmetry of failure: a dish that's underdone can be left in longer, while a dish that's burnt is finished. Extending is recoverable; scorching isn't.
The Dishes That Don't Compromise
For most food, temperature is a speed setting — hotter cooks faster. For a handful of things it's a structural instruction, and changing it changes the result rather than the timing.
- Puff pastry and flaky pastry — need high heat to flash the water in the butter into steam fast enough to separate the layers. Cooler means greasy, not slower.
- Choux — has to set before it collapses.
- Soufflé — the rise depends on a specific heat curve.
- Bread — initial oven spring is temperature-dependent, and many loaves want a hot start specifically.
- Custards and cheesecake — the opposite problem: too hot and they curdle or crack, and no amount of time adjustment fixes it.
