Recipes are written in isolation. Meals are not cooked in isolation. That gap is where the difficulty lives, and it's why someone who can cook every individual dish on the table can still end up serving a cold side next to a roast that was carved too early.
Timing a meal is a scheduling problem with three constraints — the clock, the oven, and what each dish tolerates while it waits. This guide takes them in that order.
Constraint 1: The Clock
Serving time is the only fixed point. Everything is scheduled backwards from it, one dish at a time:
Start prep at = serving time − rest − cook − prep

Two things get left out of plans and shouldn't be. Prep is a scheduled block, not a free action — chopping for four dishes takes considerably longer than chopping for one. And a fuller oven cooks more slowly, roughly 10% for two dishes and 15% for three, because the food absorbs heat and the dishes block airflow around each other.
Add 15 to 30 minutes of buffer. Being early costs nothing; being late with no slack is how people end up turning the oven up and burning things.
Constraint 2: The Oven
One oven and several dishes that want it is the bottleneck in most meals. Three situations, three answers:

The reason that last row exists: for most food, temperature is a speed setting, but for laminated pastry and anything that rises, it's a structural instruction. Lowering it doesn't slow the dish down — it changes what the dish becomes. That distinction organises the oven sharing guide.
The Resting Window Solves Most Oven Conflicts
Here is the piece that turns a tight plan into a workable one. A roast that rests for 30 minutes leaves the oven 30 minutes before you serve. That is not a delay — it is an empty oven, at any temperature you like, arriving exactly when your sides need heat.
Plan into it deliberately. Roast potatoes finish there. Gratins get their browning pass. Bread warms. Anything cooked earlier comes back up. Most meal-timing problems dissolve once the rest is treated as a resource rather than a wait, and cooks who skip resting to save time end up carving a roast that leaks onto the board and serving cool sides.

Constraint 3: What Each Dish Tolerates
Not every dish needs to finish at 6:30. Some hold for an hour; some are ruined in ten minutes. Sequencing by tolerance rather than by importance is what makes a plan flexible.

Read the table bottom-up and it doubles as your cooking order. Anything in the last two rows is scheduled to finish at serving time; everything above can be moved earlier to relieve pressure on the oven.

Step 6 matters more than it sounds. By the time the kitchen is busy, nobody is holding a six-dish schedule in their head reliably. A written list with clock times against it is the difference between following a plan and improvising.
When It Still Goes Wrong
